The online conference management system is open for the re-submission of accepted research papers, industry case studies, exploratory papers, demos and posters, workshops and tutorials. Please submit a word document via the system and email a pdf copy to pc@pdc2010.org.

SUBMISSION DESCRIPTIONS.

  1. Research papers: (full paper – maximum 10 pages) Research papers should report on completed research which furthers topics in Participatory Design. Research papers will be published in the ACM International Conference series. High academic standards will be expected. Each submitted paper will be double blind reviewed by at least 3 reviewers. Please make sure submissions are anonymous. Accepted papers should be revised according to the review reports and the language should be checked by a native English speaker.
  2. Exploratory papers: (short paper – maximum 4 pages) Exploratory papers should present ideas that could benefit from discussion with members of the Participatory Design community. These papers may include work-in-progress, experiences of reflective practitioners, and first drafts of novel concepts and approaches. Each submitted paper will be double blind reviewed by at least 3 reviewers. Please make sure submissions are anonymous.
  3. Interactive workshops: (2 page proposal) Half day and full day sessions on topics that include methods, practices, and other areas of interest and that support an interactive format where active participation beyond presentation is solicited. The proposal must justify the need for the workshop and should contain a title, goals, technique, relevance to Participatory Design and a schedule. Intended participants and how they will be recruited should also be described.
  4. Tutorials: (2 page proposal) Half day and full day sessions for teaching conceptual frameworks, methods/techniques, and novel approaches. The proposal should contain a title, goals, technique, relevance to PD and a schedule. Please describe in the proposal any handouts that you intend to make available.
  5. Doctoral consortium: (2 page proposal) Full day session. The doctoral consortium is intended for PhD students working within the field of Participatory Design. It will provide students with an opportunity to present issues of concern to them in their doctoral studies and receive extensive feedback from the session co-chairs and student participants. Enrolment is limited and selection will been based on application submissions. The proposal should give an overview of the PhD project, including research question, method, how the PhD work is related to Participatory Design, the status of current work, major findings and plans for further research. Accepted applicants will be asked to provide a revised and elaborated proposal a few months before the conference.
  6. Artefacts, posters, products, interactive demonstrations: (2 page proposal) Works may include projects, techniques, and products developed with a commitment to the principles and philosophy of Participatory Design and they may incorporate any forms or genres of information/communication technologies or digital media (e.g., sound, still/moving images, touch, space, text, etc.). Successful proposals will be presented during a session where participants can interact with presenters and artefacts. The proposal should include title, goals, technique, relevance to Participatory Design and a sketch or design, as appropriate. Please describe your plan for audience participation.
  7. Industry Day Presentations: (1-2 page proposals) There are two types of submissions for this new, special one day Industry Day Track:
Industry Cases - that report on the use of participatory design (PD) methods, tools, and/or practices within commercial, non-profit and governmental organisations, and,
PDC Pitch Fest for academics and non-profits – where representatives from not-for-profit and academic sectors “pitch” design ideas in a short, lively format. This is an opportunity to present participatory design research, concepts and ideas to a panel of ‘industry’ representatives. Submissions for Industry Day do not require academic reviewing and will be reviewed instead by an industry panel.

  8. The Artful Integrators’ Award: (email nomination form to award@pdc2010.org) We welcome nominations for the fourth Artful Integrators’ Award, to be presented at PDC 2010 in Sydney, Australia. The Award is intended to recognize outstanding achievement in the area of participatory design of information and communications technologies. Where traditional design awards have gone to individual designers and/or singular objects, the Artful Integrator’s Award emphasizes the importance of collaborative participation in design, and a view of good design as the effective alignment of diverse collections of people, practices and artefacts. 9. Student volunteers: We are looking for a team of dedicated student volunteers to make PDC function. In exchange for free conference registration and dinner (thanks to CHISIG) you are expected to work about 20 hours during the conference. Sometimes this means you will be in sessions, sometimes you will not be. If you are presenting, of course we will work with your schedule. Instructions for how to apply to be a volunteer can be found here, in the meantime if you have any questions, please contact volunteer@pdc2010.org
