Lord Mayors Welcome, Wednesday 1 Dec (Time TBC)
Sydney Town Hall
The Lord Mayor of Sydney, Councillor Clover Moore, will host a welcome to the City for PDC participants at Sydney Town Hall, George St. Participants will need to show the invitation that comes with their registration package. The Town Hall is easily accessible from UTS on foot or by bus or train.
Walk- The simplest way is to walk. From UTS to Town Hall is a 20-25 minute walk. Just go straight up George St until you get to the Town Hall, or take back streets if you have a map or know the way already. Alternatively just tag along with one of the locals or a student volunteer.
Bus- Most of the buses that go along Broadway (the main road in front of UTS) will also go past Town Hall – any bus going to City, Circular Quay, Millers Point or the Queen Victoria Building. You will need to purchase a MyBus 1 ticket before you board the bus.
Train- Walk from UTS to Central Station. The walk takes about 10mins. Once at Central purchase a ticket and proceed to Platform 16. A train leaves every 5-10 minutes. Town Hall is your first stop.
Conference dinner, Thursday 2 Dec from 7pm
Nick’s Bondi Beach Pavillion
Participants can celebrate this PDC in the beautifully restored 1928 Bondi Pavilion with expansive views over internationally renowned Bondi Beach. Enjoy pre-dinner drinks and canapés from 7pm followed by dinner in the glass atrium while the sun sets.
It can take an hour to get to Bondi so leave plenty of time.
Student volunteers will be available to escort participants, who would like to swim before dinner, to the beach and the dressing sheds; they will mind belongings and direct them to the dinner venue. Potential surfers need to leave straight after the conference finishes and sign up sheets will be available at registration. If you would like to swim you will need to bring your own towel and swimming costume (also referred to as cossies, togs (in some parts of the country), budgie smugglers (men only) or swimmers). Please ensure that you swim safely and between the flags.
Those who don’t wish to swim might prefer a walk on the famous Bondi promenade or the beach itself before (or after) dinner.
But this is a very wonderful place to be on an early summer’s night!
Going by taxi- A taxi will cost approximately AUD$35-$40 and take about 25 minutes. A taxi can take up to 4 passengers, so you may consider sharing. You can hail a cab on Broadway just outside UTS.
Going by bus- This will cost AUD$3.30 and will take about 1 hour. You will need to purchase a MyBus 2ticket before boarding the bus.
Walk to Railway Square (the side that faces Central Station). Catch the 378 (Bronte Bus) from Railway Square to Bondi Junction (MyBus 2ticket). At Bondi Junction interchange choose any of the buses that go to Bondi Beach (eg. 380, 381, 382, 333). The buses to Bondi go from the same bus stand where you get off the 378 – just walk to the front of the stand.
Alternatively, express buses to Bondi (333) also leave from Liverpool Street (cnr Elizabeth) in the city which will take approx 30-45 minutes.
Going by train and bus- This will cost AUD$5.20 and will take about 45 mins.
Walk from UTS to Central Station. The walk takes about 10mins. (see map above). At Central Station, purchase a single adult fare to Bondi Junction. (Or return if you like, the trains run till about midnight).
Proceed to Platform 24. A train leaves every 5-10 minutes to Bondi Junction. The trip takes 13 minutes and Bondi Junction is the last stop.
Walk from Bondi Junction Station to Bondi Junction Bus Interchange. The interchange is directly outside the train station.
Catch bus 333 from Stand A3. A bus leaves every few minutes. ( You can also catch buses 380, 381 or 382)
Getting to Nicks once at Bondi Beach
If coming by bus you will pass through a roundabout on approach to Bondi Beach (you’ll see the beach on your right). Alight the bus at your next opportunity.
Find a safe place to cross the road and walk toward the beach.
Once you reach the promenade, turn left and proceed to Nick’s Bondi Beach Pavilion. You will see tables out the front and the glass frontage of the restaurant.
Getting home
Either hail a taxi, or for a return bus trip take the 380, 381, 382, or 333 bus from Campbell Parade back to Bondi Junction. Then either train or bus back to the city.
